The Art Of An Emergency December 1, 2011 by Aaron Jackson 142 Comments By Bronnie Ware on November 30, 2011 For many years I worked in palliative care. My sister worked in this area for a long time. It took me a long time to begin to understand what palliative care is about. When I did understand, I learned to do it. I learned the art of communicating with people when they are dying. I learned how to be with them when they are ill and how to leave them when they are dead.. the art of emergency, knowing when to go in, knowing when to listen, knowing when to end. And I learned to communicate the diagnosis and prognosis to family. I've had a lot of experience doing that. I try to work this out as a way of conversation that allows me to talk about it with some depth, some empathy. It may be hard to listen. I don't know the mind of the dying. What they're thinking. What they might have been thinking. What I'm thinking. I do know something about the psyche of the dying and the psyche of the living. I've been on both sides of death, as a patient and as a caregiver. I was blessed with a wonderful mother who died at sixty-four, a beloved grandmother who died at seventy-three, a wonderful sister who died at thirty-seven, and I can tell you that there's a vast difference between the grief of losing my mother at sixty-four and the grief of losing my mother at eighty-three. If I can be there to comfort people who are grieving at eighty-three, I will make their lives more important. If I can ease the suffering of people at eighty-three I will make their lives more important. I believe there are a lot of souls in pain. There are a lot of people going through hell. So much is lost when a person dies. This is hard for me to accept because I have been through much of this. It's like time has stood still while I've worked through this so much. I think it was the turning point in my life when I was a student at nursing
